Mark 6:14-29 outline - John the Baptist Beheaded

Background of John the Baptist…

1:14-15 John to prison

Jesus is rejected 6:3, 6 but still presses on 6:11 with the 12 disciples with a de-brief

Why has Mark so ordered his material like this???

8:34 - costly to follow Jesus

Two warnings……

1. Sitting on the fence

Have you taken the opportunity to respond to Jesus?

If not why not?

2. Seizing at sin

Are you quick at seizing worldly things, how might you do the same for spiritual things?

What is your danger to be like Herod or Herodias?

It was costly for John, how might it be costly for you to follow Jesus?

  • Wise seizes the opportunity to repent.
  • Week never make a decision.
  • Foolish make foolish quick decisions.

Mark 6: 1-13 Outline

1. Jesus teaches (1-2a)
v2 “…and many who heard him were amazed.”
“The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as teachers of the law.” Mark 1:22

2. Jesus is rejected (2b-6a)
v4 “a prophet without honour”
v6a “he was amazed at their lack of faith”
“He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their face, he was despised, and we esteemed him not.” Isaiah 53:3
“He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not recognise him.” John 1: 10-11

3. Jesus teaches and sends out the twelve (6b-13)
v7 with “authority over evil spirits,” and
v12 “to preach that people should repent.”
“This is how you shall eat it: with your belt on your waist, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste” Exodus 12:11

Questions
  • When can I find myself “offended” by Jesus?
  • As a follower of Jesus, what should my priority towards others be?
  • Am I willing to be rejected because I believe in Jesus?
  • What does “shake the dust off my feet” mean, am I willing to do it, and why?

Mark5:21-43 Outline

Interwoven with two remarkable healings with similarities

Word for life

How might we have a superstitious faith?

What promises do you build your life on?

How might the promises of Jesus help in life? Can you think of any others?

Mark 10:45, ‘For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
John 3:16,  ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’
Matthew11:28,  “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Colossians 3:23, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.’
1 Peter 5:7, ‘Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.’
Philippians 4:6-7 ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.’

Word for death

Why do you think Jesus gave them strict orders not to let anyone know about Jesus raising the little girl from the dead?

Has Jesus come for you to make life better for you or is there something more?

Jesus will later say, ‘Heaven and earth will pass away but my words will never pass away’ 13:31 What investment are you making for life and death?
