This week we are looking at Mark 8:31-9:1, which is all about the mission of Jesus going the way of suffering and the cross. I attach a handout to help you focus on the meeting along with some application question to help us with our time together which will also be printed out for you at church.
Here is the link to today's service - I am sorry the live link didnt work and the upload took longer than expected and picture view is limited.

Mark 8:31-9:1 outline |
Introduction
Chapters 1 to 8 Who is Jesus? Chapters 8 to 16 Why did Jesus come?
8:31, also 9:31, ‘He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.”
10:33-34, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”
The cross of salvation v31-33
How might we think along with what Peter said to Jesus in v31?
10:45 ‘For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve , and to give his life as a ransom for many.’
1 Peter 3:18, Peter wrote, ‘For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.’
What things might we want to add to the work of Jesus on the cross for us?
The cross of discipleship v34-9:1
v35
- The right hands for your soul…
v36-37
- The right mind set…
v38
- The right nerves…
Whose hands, mind set and nerve will we trust in? How might we apply these things?
Prayer - have you prayed it?
Dear Father God, I know that I am not worthy to be accepted by you. I don’t deserve your gift of eternal life. I am guilty of rebelling against you and ignoring you. I need forgiveness. Thank you for sending your son to die for me that I may be forgiven. Thank you that he rose from the dead to give me new life. Please forgive me and change me, that I may live with Jesus as my ruler. In Jesus name, Amen
(prayer from 2 ways to live)
Confession
Most merciful God,
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed.
We have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been,
help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be;
that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God.
May the Father of all mercies cleans us form our sins
and restore us in his image to the praise and glory of his name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Amen.
Assurance : 1 John 1:8-9
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
Mark 8:31 to 9:1
31 Jesus then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.”
